The last version released under Google ran for several years.įor your hobbyist use you can still use SketchUp 2017 Make and get components from the 3D Warehouse through the Components panel or as you described, you can access the 3D Warehouse through your browser and get the Collada files to import. It was clear that Google wasn't interested in investing any more to improve SketchUp. Google would have just let SketchUp die like they have with many other applications they've purchased over the years. Google didn't make any conditions like that when they sold SketchUp to Trimble.

If you use SketchUp 8 or 2013, you wont be able to access the 3D Warehouse using the Get Models tool, or through the Components window. If you use SketchUp 2014 or 2015, there are no changes. I doubt that is what Google had in mind when they sold this software to Trimble on the condition that there would always be a free version available to the public for private, non-professional use. SketchUp is changing the way older software versions access outside applications, namely Google Earth and the 3D Warehouse. It appears the functionality of the free versions of this invaluable software are being progressively diminished, leaving frequent users with only a very expensive alternative to achieve the same results that have been provided free for years. I assumed the later model versions probably would not work with my Sketchup 2017, so I tried downloading and importing the Collada version but unfortunately that didn't work either. When downloading the item in my browser I was offered 4 options: Sketchup 2019, 2020, 0r 2021, or something called "Collada". after payment of US$299/CA$375 to Trimble.

Reportedly it involves logging into 33 with an up to date browser using Trimble id and password, and downloading the desired warehouse item then importing the item into your Sketchup 2017 model. Even with its extensions, it is still a little lacking when creating complex designs, but for beginner and intermediate users, it’s a great choice.Downloading 3D warehouse items into a Sketchup 2017 model no longer works, but apparently a workaround exists.

If you are looking for physical design software, then SketchUp is worth checking out and because it’s web-based, there is nothing to download, so you can try it out straight away. With a good range of extensions, SketchUp is a free-to-use 3D design tool that is easy to use, and powerful enough for many hobbyist users, and has been popular, particularly with woodworkers and for more architectural designs. Fortunately, SketchUp has a good selection of videos to help you bring your design skills at Convenient designĪlongside this learning material, there is a library of models that other users have shared that you can look at, edit, incorporate, or expand at will. SketchUp is easy to get started with, but unless this is something that you’ve worked with before, it will take a little practice before you’re able to create complex models.
